READING ACTIVE
DETAILED EXPLANATION OF ACTIVE TESTING
In order to help students be better prepared for Active reading tests and quizzes
that will be given on a weekly basis, I have set up a review so that you will clearly
know what material is being evaluated. Students should regularly refer to this page
if they want to be successful in this class.
MONDAY VOCABULARY QUIZZES
Upon the introduction of each new unit in Active, students will first take a
vocabulary quiz at the beginning of class. As this will happen before any word is
spoken regarding the chapter, students are required to have already learned the 9
vocabulary words from the first reading of a unit along with their parts of speech,
i.e. noun, verb, adjective, or adverb. Then students must match each vocabulary
word with its definition. In addition, students must learn the prefix, suffix, or root
word focused on in each particular unit. They must know its meaning and provide 3
sample words using that prefix, suffix, or root word (NOT one of the 9 vocabulary
words). With these three words, students must also supply their definitions.
THURSDAY UNIT TESTS
Later in the week, there will be a reading test on the particular unit studied that
week. Included in this test are the nine vocabulary words from BOTH readings, a
total of 18 words, which students must correctly place into sentences. These words
may need to be altered to indicate plural nouns or verb tense. After this, students
must select the correct answer to five multiple choice comprehension questions.
Finally, students will be required to write an academic paragraph answering a
question related to the topic of the reading unit.

Chapter One
Every Monday, class will begin with
the vocabulary quiz. This means
that students must know the
vocabulary before coming to class.
If students have questions about the
vocabulary, they may ask before the
quizzes are handed out. The quiz
should last no longer than 15
minutes.
After the quiz, we will read the first
reading together as a class.
Students take turns reading it
paragraph by paragraph, after which
questions are welcome.
Chapter Two
This reading will NOT be read in
class. Students must read this on
their own for homework and be
ready to answer comprehension
questions that are similar to, but not
the same as, the questions for the
second reading in the book.
Review chapters will not be read in
class at all.
IT'S EASY!
If you like getting 100% on a
regular basis, here's how to do it.
Every Monday quiz comes virtually
word for word from the first chapter
of each unit. Just by looking in the
book, learning the vocabulary, and
doing the exercises, getting a high
score is virtually assured... and it's
easy.
EXPLORE MORE
Expand upon what you're reading
by finding more to read on the
topic. There's this wonderful thing
available to all students that was
not available to me when I was your
age: the Internet. Explore our
topics further on the internet in
order to strengthen your reading
skills. Vocabulary will repeat when
reading the same topic, and your
grasp of the topic will deepen,
which will surely help you when
speaking, reading, or writing on that
topic in the future.
